Together we can save the unique Australian Platypus!

We'd like to introduce you to Trey, Mac, Morunda, and Annie (see videos). These four platypus are residents of the Taronga Zoo in Australia. This charming species faces threats to its food supplies, waterways, and breeding grounds that have put it on the path to extinction.

Drought and bushfires in Australia in the last two summers resulted in the loss of over one billion native animals, and put the survival of the platypus in immediate peril. Their habitat is shrinking, their food sources are becoming more scarce and they are predated upon by foxes and feral cats. Current climate predictions only exacerbate the problem. Platypus populations are expected to decline by a further 50% by 2050, following current trends.

But hope for these odd little mammals is not lost. Greater Good Charities is working with Taronga Zoo to build and operate rescue and research facilities to house up to 65 platypus. The Taronga Platypus Centre for Rescue, Rehabilitation, Research, and Reproduction will be a high-tech facility equipped with technology enabling researchers to study, record and share previously unknown information about this mysterious species, while providing the best health and welfare for the platypus. As well as rescuing and providing refuge in crisis times, they will collect wild founders from six different river systems in order to study and establish a breeding program which maintains genetic and behavioral diversity, with the ultimate goal being release back to the wild.

You can help save this duck-billed web-footed egg-laying furry little mammal! The platypus is one of the most unique species on our Earth, and we have a chance to help save these precious creatures from extinction. Your gift will go toward the care of the platypus currently under Taronga's wing (including Trey, Mac, Morunda, and Annie) while the Taronga Platypus Centre is constructed. The design of the new facilities is complete and construction will commence later this year. Donate now!

This project is made possible through the generous support of Morgridge Family Foundation (MFF). Thanks to MFF, the impact of every dollar donated up to $20,000 will be doubled. It's twice as much reason for a webbed foot to waggle with joy!
